The Port of Algeciras has been named the second most productive European port. An award obtained in the ‘IHS Market Dredging and Port Construction Innovation Awards 2016’ that recognizes its impressive commercial activity.

With this recognition, Algeciras once again demonstrates that an increase in productivity can go hand in hand with a constant improvement in its sustainability policies; an issue that, for years, has been a top priority for the Port Authority.
Its current management policies have been based on the need to find a balance between economic development, preservation of natural resources and quality of life of its social environment. So much so that in March 2016 the Environmental Control Office (OCMA) was constituted, an entity in charge of controlling the environmental impact of all the port’s activities.
One of the most important tasks in this area is the treatment of MARPOL waste (the management of ship waste to prevent it being dumped at sea).
The ports of Algeciras Bay and Tarifa are at the forefront in residues and oily waste management and, thanks to this, in the last 20 years the adjacent areas and beaches are much cleaner.
Sertego has been providing this service in the Port of Algeciras for more than two decades. Due to this, it has a treatment facility capable of storing 10,000 m3 of waste and a staff of 54 employees who provide service 24 hours, 365 days a year.
In addition to the treatment of Marpol waste, Sertego also offers the service of collection of oily waste (with barge and tanker trucks) and the collection, treatment and regeneration of used oil generated by fishing and sports boats.
With all this, Sertego has a comprehensive offer of services that, along with the management policies of the Port, have managed to make Algeciras a port in which productivity and sustainability fo hand in hand.
