The plant for the regeneration of used oils and the distribution of lubricant bases located in the municipality of Fuenlabrada (Madrid) has made an effort to reduce the generation of a certain type of hazardous waste resulting from the treatment of used oil.
This waste consists of the generation of hydro carbonated water that is periodically sent to an authorised manager. However, a commitment has been made to seek mechanisms to avoid the generation of this waste, at least to a considerable extent. To this end, adjustments have been made to the process and water that complies with the parameters established for discharge into the sewage system has been recovered.
With these changes, a double objective will be achieved. On the one hand, to reduce the generation of hazardous waste; and on the other hand, to reduce the atmospheric emissions generated in the process of transporting this waste to the final disposal facility.
In order to develop this idea, both Canal de Isabel II and Fuenlabrada City Council have supported the project, and once the quality of the water to be discharged into the SIS has been checked, the discharge has been authorised.
With this aim, the amount of hydrocarbon water that is managed as waste is expected to be reduced by approximately 16%, thus avoiding the generation of approximately 1,100 m3 of contaminated water, which, once treated and suitable for discharge, would be sent to the SIS. Additionally, up to 44 journeys via 25 tonne tankers from the Fuenlabrada facility to the final hydrocarbon waste treatment plant will no longer be necessary. This will mean a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 19.02%.
We hope that this “R” for reduce that our Fuenlabrada waste oil regeneration plant is committed to is one of many initiatives that are carried out to achieve the objective of aligning our processes with the circular economy.
